How to Get From Central Belgrade to Zemun

For most visitors travelling from central Belgrade to Zemun’s historic centre, the simplest public-transport option is a direct bus from Zeleni Venac. Lines 15 and 84 currently connect Zeleni Venac with central Zemun, although both continue beyond the visitor area. For the market, old town and Gardoš, leave the bus in central Zemun rather than travelling to the final terminus.

The most important planning advice is also the simplest:

Do not enter only “Zemun” as your destination. Zemun is both a historic riverside neighbourhood and a large municipality. Use a precise destination such as Zemun Market, Glavna Street, Gardoš Tower or Kej Oslobođenja.

Zemun railway station, Zemun Polje and the outer residential neighbourhoods are all genuinely in Zemun, but they are not convenient arrival points for a first-time visitor trying to see the market, Gardoš and the Danube quay.

Belgrade’s city public transport is currently free. The Tourism Organisation of Belgrade states that buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz have been free for passengers since 1 January 2025. No ordinary city-bus ticket is currently required. Policies and routes can change, so check the official transport information before travelling.

The difference is not cosmetic. Asking for “Zemun” could send you to a railway station, municipal neighbourhood or final bus terminus several kilometres from the old centre.

If this is your first visit, start around Zemun Market. It sits between the principal historic streets, Gardoš and the river, making it the most practical starting point for our four-hour Zemun itinerary.

What is the easiest way to reach Zemun?

From Republic Square, Knez Mihailova or Terazije

Walk downhill to Zeleni Venac and take a direct bus toward Zemun. Lines 15 and 84 are currently the most useful routes for first-time visitors because both connect Zeleni Venac with central Zemun.

The walk to Zeleni Venac is part of the journey, so include it in your timing. Zeleni Venac is not one small roadside stop: it is a transport interchange with several stopping positions around the market and adjoining streets. Check the platform and direction shown in the live planner before boarding.

From Zeleni Venac

Use bus 15 or 84, depending on where you want to begin in Zemun.

• Bus 15 is useful for Avijatičarski Trg, City Park and the southern approach to the historic centre.

• Bus 84 continues through central Zemun via Glavna and toward Trg Branka Radičevića, making it useful for the old centre and lower approach to Gardoš.

Do not remain on either bus simply because its final destination still contains the word Zemun. Both lines continue beyond the compact visitor area.

From Dorćol

Dorćol and Zemun appear close on a river map, but there is no direct pedestrian crossing between their riverfronts. A taxi is often the simplest door-to-door choice.

For public transport, compare the current route from your exact position with walking or connecting to Zeleni Venac. Lower Dorćol, Republic Square and the Danube riverfront are not interchangeable starting points, so one permanent instruction would be misleading.

From Belgrade Waterfront or the central bus station

Compare a direct taxi with the public-transport route shown on the day. Walking to Zeleni Venac may be reasonable without luggage, but it is not automatically the best option from every part of Belgrade Waterfront.

Road and transport works around Karađorđeva, the riverfront and bridge approaches can change stop locations and travel times. A route that looks direct on an old travel article may now require a detour.

From Beograd Centar railway station, or Prokop

BG Voz can be useful, but compare the complete journey rather than only the train time.

Beograd Centar -commonly called Prokop- is not beside Republic Square. Zemun railway station is not in the historic centre. A quick train segment may still require travel at both ends, making a taxi or bus faster door to door.

From New Belgrade

Do not travel back to the old city centre merely to catch a Zeleni Venac bus. Use a current direct bus, taxi or suitable bicycle route from your actual location.

New Belgrade covers a large area, so “from New Belgrade” is not a complete route request. Ušće, Block 20, the central bus station, Arena and the western residential blocks require different comparisons.

Bus 15 from Zeleni Venac to central Zemun

The official route currently identifies line 15 as:

Zemun /Novi Grad/ – Zeleni Venac – Zemun /Novi Grad/

From Zeleni Venac toward Zemun, the route crosses Branko’s Bridge, continues through Bulevar Nikole Tesle and reaches central Zemun through Karađorđev Trg, Karađorđeva and Avijatičarski Trg before continuing into western Zemun.

Bus 15 is especially useful when your first stop is:

• Zemun City Park;

• the Kontumac chapels;

• Avijatičarski Trg;

• the southern part of the historic centre;

• the beginning of a walk toward Zemun Market.

The words “Novi Grad” on the destination display refer to the line’s terminus, not the historic old town you are trying to visit. Leave the bus in central Zemun.

Traffic across Branko’s Bridge and through New Belgrade affects the journey. A timetable is not a promise of the exact arrival minute.

Bus 84 from Zeleni Venac to Glavna and Gardoš

Line 84 currently operates between Zeleni Venac and Nova Galenika. From the city centre, it crosses Branko’s Bridge, follows Bulevar Nikole Tesle and enters central Zemun before continuing along Glavna, through Trg Branka Radičevića and toward northern Zemun.

Bus 84 is usually the more intuitive choice when your first destination is:

• Glavna Street;

• Zemun Market and the central squares;

• the lower approach to Gardoš;

• Trg Branka Radičevića;

• the northern side of the old centre.

The final stop is not a visitor attraction. Leave in central Zemun and continue on foot.

For Gardoš, the bus reduces the approach but does not remove the hill. A taxi can take you closer to the tower area, while a bus generally leaves a pedestrian ascent.

Which Zemun stop should you use?

The final drop-off choice depends on the route you want to walk.

For Zemun Market and the four-hour itinerary

Use a central stop that gives the clearest walk to Masarikov Trg. Bus 84 may provide a more direct Glavna Street approach, while bus 15 is useful if you want to begin with City Park before reaching the market.

For City Park and the Kontumac chapels

Use Avijatičarski Trg as the main orientation point. The park is a better first stop for the religious-heritage route than for the market-first itinerary.

For Gardoš

Use bus 84 to reach the old centre or northern Glavna area, then walk uphill. Entering “Gardoš Tower” into a live planner is more reliable than choosing a distant terminus because it calculates the final walk.

For Zemunski Kej

Use a central Zemun stop and walk toward Kej Oslobođenja. The promenade is long, so entering only “Zemunski kej” can produce an arrival point far from the market and Gardoš.

For a restaurant

Use the restaurant’s exact name and address. Zemun’s riverfront restaurants extend beyond the central section, and the best stop for one may be inconvenient for another.

Before publication, the route map should show the exact current stop names in Serbian, the corresponding bus line and a nearby landmark that helps visitors recognise when to leave.

How to use Belgrade public transport

Belgrade’s public city transport is currently free, including ordinary buses and BG Voz. Under the present system, visitors do not need to buy or validate a city-bus ticket.

Practical advice:

• Check both the line number and direction.

• Allow passengers to leave before boarding.

• Move away from the door after entering.

• Keep bags controlled on crowded vehicles.

• Follow the journey on a live map if you do not recognise the stops.

• Press the stop button before your destination when required.

• Check official service changes during roadworks, races and public events.

The same bus number runs in two directions. Seeing “15” or “84” is not enough; confirm that the display and route are taking you toward Zemun.

The free-fare policy is operational information, not a permanent constitutional guarantee. Keep a visible last-checked date and verify it during every transport review.

What about buses 704, 706 and 707?

These lines can appear in route planners, but they should not be the article’s principal first-time recommendation.

Their central terminals and routes have changed during recent transport reorganisations. A City of Belgrade notice moved lines 704, 706 and 707 from Zeleni Venac to New Belgrade’s Block 20 in February 2025, while later official listings may show further changes.

Use them only when a current official planner recommends them from your actual starting point. Do not walk to an old terminal because a pre-2025 travel blog says the bus leaves there.

Lines 15 and 84 provide a more stable and understandable explanation for visitors beginning near Zeleni Venac, while the official service-change page should resolve temporary alternatives.

Is a taxi from central Belgrade to Zemun worth it?

A licensed taxi is often the simplest option when:

• two to four people can share the fare;

• you have luggage;

• rain, heat or cold makes transfers unpleasant;

• mobility is limited;

• you have a restaurant or activity reservation;

• you are travelling late;

• you need to reach a precise address rather than the general centre.

Order through a recognised dispatch service, licensed taxi application (Yandex, Pink Taxi,...) or your accommodation. Do not accept an unsolicited ride from an unmarked vehicle. Even vehicles that have a TAXI sign but no company name to it should be avoided.

Give the exact destination:

• “Zemunska pijaca, Masarikov Trg” for the market;

• “Kula Gardoš” for the tower area;

• the full restaurant name and address for dinner;

• “Avijatičarski Trg” for City Park.

The fare depends on the starting address, route, traffic, waiting and tariff period. Do not publish one guaranteed price for “central Belgrade to Zemun,” because Republic Square, Dorćol, Waterfront and Prokop are different origins.

Ask whether card payment is available before departure if you do not have cash. Some dispatch services allow card selection in the application, but this should not be assumed for every taxi.

For an accessible vehicle, larger boot or child seat, arrange the requirement in advance rather than expecting the next available street taxi to provide it.

Is BG Voz a good way to reach historic Zemun?

BG Voz is fast between railway stations when the schedule aligns, but it is not automatically the best way to reach Zemun Market, Gardoš or the quay.

The complete journey may involve:

1. Reaching Beograd Centar/Prokop or another rail station

2. Waiting for the train

3. Travelling to Zemun station

4. Leaving the station

5. Taking another bus, taxi or substantial walk to the historic centre

That can be useful when you are already near Prokop or travelling to western Zemun. It can be inefficient when you begin near Republic Square and want the market.

Use BG Voz when:

• you are staying near a convenient rail station;

• you arrive at Prokop by national train;

• your final destination is closer to Zemun railway station than to the old centre;

• the live schedule creates a convenient connection.

Prefer the Zeleni Venac bus or a taxi when:

• you are already in the historic centre of Belgrade;

• your destination is Zemun Market, Gardoš or central Zemunski Kej;

• the train requires a long wait or awkward onward connection;

• you have luggage and want door-to-door travel.

The important distinction is:

A short train ride is not necessarily a short journey.

Can you walk from central Belgrade to Zemun?

Yes, but it should be planned as a substantial urban walk rather than a convenient transfer.

A walking route may involve:

• crossing toward New Belgrade;

• long modern-city sections;

• road or riverfront construction;

• sun, rain and wind exposure;

• additional distance once you reach central Zemun;

• enough remaining energy for the Gardoš climb.

Walking is appropriate when the journey itself is part of the day. It is not the best default for visitors with a four-hour Zemun itinerary or a fixed lunch reservation.

Do not follow an improvised riverbank line merely because the two neighbourhoods look close across the water. Use a verified pedestrian route and check current bridge and construction conditions.

Can you cycle from central Belgrade to Zemun?

Cycling can work particularly well from parts of New Belgrade and the riverfront, and Zemun lies within the wider Danube and EuroVelo 6 cycling environment.

However, do not assume that every central origin connects to Zemun through one continuous protected cycleway.

Check:

• traffic separation along the chosen route;

• temporary construction diversions;

• shared pedestrian sections;

Is there a public ferry from central Belgrade to Zemun?

Sightseeing cruises that pass Zemun are not passenger ferries. They follow a sightseeing route and return passengers according to their own boarding arrangements.

Belgrade Turtle Cruise passes Zemun from the Danube, but it does not normally collect or drop off passengers at Zemunski Kej. The cruise is a different perspective on Zemun - not transport to it.

How to return from Zemun to central Belgrade

Plan the return before you begin dinner or an evening walk.

• Save the stop or pickup point used on arrival.

• Check the opposite direction rather than boarding the same line on the same side of the road.

• Confirm that the destination display says Zeleni Venac when that is where you want to return.

• Check temporary service changes again in the evening.

• Allow time for traffic across Branko’s Bridge.

• Use a licensed taxi for luggage, late departures or a tight reservation.

• Do not rely on the final scheduled bus as your only option.

Belgrade has a separate night network. The current official list includes line 15N serving Republic Square and parts of Zemun, but the night route is not identical to daytime line 15.

Verify the route, stop and departure time on the evening you travel.

If you need to reach a Belgrade Turtle cruise after visiting Zemun, do not navigate back simply to “the city centre.” Use the current cruise meeting point and boarding time. The boat does not depart from Zemun.

Is the journey to Zemun accessible?

Accessibility depends on the entire chain, not only whether a low-floor bus sometimes serves the line.

Check:

1. Step-free access to the departure stop

2. Kerbs and crossings around Zeleni Venac

3. The vehicle’s ramp and wheelchair space

4. Whether the ramp can deploy at the chosen stop

5. The pavement and kerbs after leaving the bus

6. Final access to the market, restaurant, quay or Gardoš

Public-transport vehicle allocation can vary. Confirm assistance needs directly rather than assuming every departure is identical.

A pre-arranged accessible taxi can reduce transfers, but it does not make Gardoš’s hill, old paving or historic thresholds step-free. The lower historic centre and quay may offer a more manageable itinerary after a field check.

BG Voz also requires checking lifts, platforms and the onward journey from Zemun station. Station accessibility does not solve the distance to the visitor area.
